Bundenbach in the Hunsrück

Hunsrück Slate forms one of the world´s most famous fossil deposit we have in Germany.

Traditional mining of roof slate in the Bundenbach / Gemünden area allows the discovery of fossils of marine life of a Lower Devonian shallow sea, some of which are of extraordinary preservation showing even their microstructure.

In the course of time roof-slate mining became unprofitable and more and more slate mines had to close down. Roof-slate mining in Bundenbach came to an end in 1999. So the last mine yielding good finds has been closed down.

But we had taken precautions in time and had stored a lot of raw material. So we are able to work out new high-quality fossils during the next years and offer it to our customers.
